NINETEEN: DIY HOLIDAYS

November 28, 2017

This year I wanted to include the girls in making our holiday decor. They love to be helpful around the house, especially when it involves doing some sort of art that will be displayed in our house. I am pretty minimal when it comes to color so everything has a sort of nordic feel, but that makes everything even easier to make in my opinion.

We used air dry clay and cookie cutters to make our white star ornaments. I rolled out the clay on a piece of parchment and the girls stamped the star shapes. We let them dry on our radiator overnight and the next morning…TA DA! ornaments ready to go on the tree.

I used some clippings from our tree and attached them with floral tape to the bottom of an embroidery hoop for our wreath for our front door. The rest of the clippings are placed in vases through out the house.

Sienna Helped me with stringing our wooden bead garland. It was a great way to work on her fine motor skills and It kept her attention for quite a while.

We also HAD to write a letter to Santa! I hope that he will enjoy Lyla’s portrait of him…… and  I’m sure he won’t mind the hot coco stains 🙂

SIXTEEN: A MONOCHROME BIG GIRL BED

August 25, 2017

This is the second round of “big girl” bed for Lyla’s room. When I was pregnant with Sienna we moved Lyla into what was our office and put Sienna in the nursery. At the time the Nursery was painted a bright sunny yellow. When we moved her into her big girl room the walls were a robins egg blue color and we purchased this beautiful Jenny Lind bed from the Land of Nod. At the time the bed was the same sunny yellow as her previous bedroom. Her room was whimsical and fun and BRIGHT!!!!!!

FEMININE MONOCHROME BEDROOM_1 Now, Let’s flash forward a couple of years…… I recently repainted the nursery and loved the results! The rest of our home is slowly being transformed to a more calm and tranquil space with white walls and lots of greys, blacks and warm woods. Our house is cozy. Its about 1200sf and you can see almost every room in the house just walking from the kitchen to the living room. So I am slowly transforming everything to act as one cohesive space instead of thinking of rooms as separate entities. The whole house with flow together more, so to speak. I was nervous that Lyla would have some strong feelings about her new room which is why I tackled the nursery first to see how she would react. When she saw Sienna’s new room she immediately wanted a makeover for her space!

I thought it was important to incorporate some of her special things. She has had this dream catcher for years so we thought it could do the best job catching all of those bad dreams if it was suspended from her “princess” canopy.

FEMININE MONOCHROME BEDROOMI am actually super happy with how the bed frame turned out! It took a few coats of black satin paint but I actually love seeing the little drip marks and paint strokes. It makes it feel like an antique! The quality of the bed is wonderful so I’m so happy we are able to give it a second life.

This bedroom is at the very back of the house. This window is east facing which means Lyla can somewhat wake up with the sun. Which kind of, sort of, helps getting her up to catch the school bus. Instead of leaving it all white, I painted the lower have of the room in a slate grey, which helps to tone down the intensity of the sun in this little room.

I’m really fortunate to have such talented people in my family. My father is retired and has since taken up wood working. He build this trundle for under the bed! Currently It is being used as toy storage, but as she gets a little older we can put an air mattress in it for when she has her friends spend the night.

Her blanket is actually a throw, that was purchased last summer on a whim while we were on vacation in Door County WI. She calls it her cozy blanket!

The fairy lights were something that I left as a little surprise for her and they are a HUGE success. We turn them on at night and snuggle in bed together to read before bedtime. They give the perfect glow.FEMININE MONOCHROME BEDROOM_4

There is still a lot to complete in this little room. I never realized how much work could so into such a small space!

FOURTEEN: LUNCH TIME LOVE NOTES

August 17, 2017

LUNCH NOTE-1.jpgSummer is over. School has officially begun! I always loved the start of school as a child. There is something about the excitement of a new class and meeting new friends and catching up with how everyones summer went.

This year Lyla is in first grade! I know…. already. This means she is actually there ALL day… Which means eating lunch at school! She was so excited. I was a nervous wreck, wondering would she eat anything?

Her day is so long, and I wanted her to know that I was thinking about her so I did the ultimate mom thing and put a note in her lunch/snack for a couple of days.

She is not full on reading yet, so I used icons to get my point across. I actually love how they turned out!
